Mental Health Awareness Workshop for Sports

Overview
Mental health is a critical component of athletic performance. In the high-pressure world of sports, the ability to recognise and support mental health challenges is essential for coaches and support staff. This workshop is designed to break the stigma around mental health in sports and provide practical tools for fostering a supportive environment.

This training focuses on the unique stressors faced by athletes—from performance anxiety and injury rehabilitation to the transition out of competitive sport. Participants will learn how to identify early warning signs of mental distress and how to guide athletes toward the right support without compromising their competitive edge.

Who Should Attend?
This programme is specifically designed for:
– Coaches and Technical Directors: At all levels of competitive and recreational sport.
– Sports Medics and Physiotherapists: Who support athletes during recovery and high-stress periods.
– Academy Managers and PE Teachers: Working with youth athletes in high-pressure environments.
– Sports Administrators: Responsible for the welfare and policy-making of a sports organisation.

Objectives
By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:
– Recognise Early Warning Signs: Identify symptoms of anxiety, depression, and burnout specifically as they manifest in a sporting context.
– Understand Performance Pressure: Explore the link between “perfectionism” and mental health struggles in elite and developing athletes.
– Provide Initial Support: Use the “Listen, Non-judgment, and Refer” framework to support an athlete in distress.
– Manage Injury Psychology: Support athletes through the mental challenges of long-term injury and the fear of returning to play.
– Foster a Supportive Culture: Implement strategies that encourage athletes to speak up about their well-being without fear of losing their place on the team.
– Identify Referral Pathways: Understand when and where to refer an athlete for professional clinical help while maintaining confidentiality.
