Moving to Dubai to teach is exciting. Tax-free income, a genuinely international classroom, and a lifestyle that is hard to match. But the paperwork side of the move catches a lot of new teachers off guard. Between visas, medical tests, KHDA permits and mandatory training, there is a checklist most people do not find out about until they are already mid-process and stressed.

Understanding How Teaching Works in Dubai
Dubai’s private education sector is regulated by the KHDA (Knowledge and Human Development Authority). The KHDA Teacher Permit: What It Actually Requires

As part of the KHDA teacher permit process, every teacher, whether newly arrived or renewing, needs to complete Mandatory Professional Development, usually referred to as the 5 MPD. It covers five core areas:

• Professional Code of Conduct
• Cultural Awareness and Regulations
• Health, Safety and Wellbeing

Documents to Prepare Before You Leave Home
• Attested degree certificate and teaching qualification. Attestation from your home country, the UAE embassy and then the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs on arrival. Start this early, it is often the slowest step
• A police clearance certificate if your nationality or your school requires one. The UAE requires this for applicants from certain countries, and individual schools may ask for it regardless, so check with your school’s HR team before assuming either way
• Passport-sized photographs on a white background
• Copies of previous employment contracts or reference letters
• Digital copies of everything above, stored somewhere you can reach from your phone
Attestation can take several weeks depending on your home country, so it is worth starting the moment you accept an offer rather than when your flight is booked.
A Rough Timeline

In your first week in Dubai: medical test, Emirates ID biometrics, and settling into accommodation.
Within the first month: residence visa stamping and KHDA teacher permit submission, usually coordinated by your school’s HR or admin team.
